Not all colleges admit students based on their ability to pay the cost of education. However, a college’s admissions policy might affect how a student covers the cost of education.

Colleges with a need-aware (or need-sensitive) admissions policy consider a student’s ability to pay tuition and fees without financial aid as well as his or her academic history when deciding whether to admit that student. Some colleges use a need-aware policy for international students or for a small portion of its new students. Some opponents of need-aware admissions question whether the policies lead to less diversity among students.
Need-blind admissions colleges do not factor a student’s financial aid needs into the admissions process. This does not mean, however, that all need-blind colleges can provide scholarships, grants, and loans to cover the full cost of education.
Need-aware policies are more common among private colleges, while need-blind policies are the norm among public institutions.
When applying to colleges, find out if they use a need-blind or need-aware policy for admitting students. Their admissions practices may affect how much financial aid you will receive.
