However, a college’s admissions policy might affect how a student covers the cost of education. Colleges with a need-aware (or need-sensitive) admissions policy consider a student’s ability to pay tuition and fees without financial aid as well as his or her academic history when deciding whether to admit that student. Some colleges use a need-aware policy for international students or for a small portion of its new students. Some opponents of need-aware admissions question whether the policies lead to less diversity among students. Need-blind admissions colleges do not factor a student’s financial aid needs into the admissions process.
